The International Day of Peace
The International Day of Peace
The United Nations General Assembly established the International Day of Peace in 1981.
Since then, every September 21, on the International Day of Peace,
the United Nations (UN) calls for 24 hours of non-violence and a global ceasefire.
Each year, people all over the world join in a one-minute silence at noon
to honour the victims of war and violence.
The International Day of Peace opens with the ringing of the UN Peace Bell
at UN headquarters in New York City.
The bell is rung only twice a year; it sounds again on the first day of spring,
marking the occasion known as Earth Day.
In 1951, 60 nations donated coins from their own countries
to be melted down as part of the metal used to cast the bell.
This is how the bell gained its international character.
Each year, the UN selects a different theme for this special day.
In recent years the themes have included 'End racism: build peace'
and 'Climate action for peace.'
These themes are meant to show people that genuine peace can only be reached
when all people are treated equally, or when we tackle the climate change
that threatens our lives.
