Text: New York’s new icon – The One World Trade Center
On September 11, 2001, two passenger planes crashed into the twin
towers of the original World Trade Center in the heart of New York.
This horrific terrorist attack destroyed the two high-rise office
buildings, which had been the tallest buildings in the world when
they opened to the public in 1973. Today, two waterfall pools mark
the exact spots where the twin towers once stood. The twin
waterfall pools are surrounded by bronze panels that commemorate the victims of the 9/11 attacks.
Now, roughly two decades later, One World Trade Center (One WTC)
has become the new icon of the New York skyline. Measured from
base to top floor, One WTC matches the height of the original
World Trade Center's twin towers - 1,368ft - before its crowning
mast raises it to the symbolic height of 1,776ft, a reference to
the year the Declaration of Independence was signed, making it the
tallest tower in the western hemisphere.
One WTC was built to be one of the safest commercial skyscrapers
ever constructed, featuring several cutting-edge safety measures,
including a set of stairways reserved exclusively for emergency
workers such as firefighters, and a ventilation system equipped
with biochemical filters. One WTC also ranks among the most
environmentally-friendly office buildings in the world, since up to 70% of its power comes from green energy.
And - thanks to the huge amount of natural light flooding in
through its enormous glass fronts - the lights don't need to be
switched on 90% of the time, allowing a great deal of electricity to be saved.
