Growing Underground - an urban farming project

The only clue that Growing Underground is not an ordinary farm comes
from the tube trains of London's Northern line rumbling through the tunnels above.

Richard Ballard, who founded the underground farm, has spent more
than five years using an old tunnel 100 feet beneath Clapham High
Street tube station to grow various kinds of vegetables, herbs,
lettuce and other salad greens.

Growing Underground supplies herb and salad mixes to both
supermarkets and restaurants. Ballard explains with pride, "The
United Kingdom is the toughest market there is for growing salad.
And despite the very low supermarket prices, we've managed to succeed here."

Ballard says farming in London brings many advantages, since he's
able to harvest and deliver within less than an hour, while also
keeping transportation costs very low. What's more, being
underground means the temperature never falls below 15°C, whereas
greenhouses above ground have to be heated. As a result, far more
harvests are possible - 60 crops a year, compared with around seven
on a traditional farm or about 25 in a greenhouse. However, since
the electricity needed to power the lights remains a major expense,
Ballard is hoping renewable energy will get cheaper soon, which
would make his farm even more profitable.
